WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?
Nose enhancement/ correcting the aging nose/ changing the shape of the nose, or rhinoplasty, is the most common facial plastic surgery procedure. The nose is the most defining characteristic of the face, so subtle changes can greatly improve one’s appearance. Nasal surgery can be performed on any part of the nose to increase or reduce its size. The size and shape of the nostrils, tip, or bridge can also be modified, as can the slope or angle of the nose. Rhinoplasty may also be performed to correct an injury or birth defect or to improve breathing. Dr. Leake has performed volumes of rhinoplasties and specializes in revision cases. Balance is achieved by creating a nose that is symmetrical to the face and body.
IS RHINOPLASTY RIGHT FOR YOU?
Though often thought of as a cosmetic procedure, nose jobs are a common treatment option for those struggling with extreme allergic reactions or obstructed breathing as well. When considering whether a rhinoplasty is right for you, there are several things that should be taken into account. For one, consider your age. With the exception of pediatric patients who have a facial birth defect such as cleft palate, younger teens are not good candidates for nose jobs. Additionally, those who smoke should consider quitting before surgery, as smoking causes poor blood flow and may pose complications during the procedure. If you have assessed the risks and consider yourself a good candidate for the procedure, scheduling a consultation with Dr. Leake is the perfect first step to improving the shape of your nose.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING RHINOPLASTY SURGERY?
During the rhinoplasty procedure, incisions are made within the nose where they are not visible. In some cases, a small incision is made between the skin of the nostril, underneath the nose. The cartilage and bone below the skin is then sculpted to create the new nose shape. Dr. Leake custom tailors the procedure based upon the patient’s specific nasal anatomy, facial structure, and unique features. A successful rhinoplasty improves facial harmony and draws attention away from the nose and toward the eyes. A typical rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and can take about 1-3 hours.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE RESULTS?
The results of your rhinoplasty will be long-lasting. Immediately after the procedure, some swelling will be experienced but will subside in roughly seven days. In some cases, it may take up to a year for nasal contour to fully refine. Until your nose completes the healing process, you may notice gradual changes in its appearance. As you age, your nose will undergo some gradual changes, but the results of rhinoplasty surgery are relatively permanent.
